The Williamstown Lady Demons were their own worst enemy in first round action of the District 32 tournament that kicked off Monday at Grant Co. High School.

The Lady Demons committed no fewer than eight errors and allowed four more runners to reach base via walks while managing just two base hits themselves in an 8-1 loss to district favorites Walton-Verona.

Williamstown was no-hit for the first five innings before picking up the pace with two hits and two other runners reaching base on errors in the final two innings. The Lady Demons had

Kristine Robertson and Kaitlyn Peer (6) close in to catch the ball on a stolen b ase attempt by Walton-Verona. Robertson  had one of the Lady Demons' few hits in the game. Williamstown lost 8-1.

a serious rally going with the bases loaded and just one out in the sixth inning before a double play ended the threat.

Walton-Verona pitching kept Williamstown off balance all night with 11 strike outs, all coming in the first five innings for an average of more than two per inning. Three of the first four Lady Demon batters struck out looking. Eight of the first 10 Williamstown batters to come to the plate struck out.

The game was a pitchers' dual for the first two innings, with Walton-Verona striking out five Lady Demon hitters and Williamstown's Jade Pinkston returning the favor by striking out five Lady Bearcats, including all three hitters in the first inning.

But poor defensive play took its toll in the third inning when three Williamstown errors led to four Walton-Verona runs, only one of them earned.

The game was 5-0 in the top of the sixth inning when Williamstown made things exciting by loading the bases. Both Ison and Evans reached base on errors followed by a single from Kristine Robertson. But multiple base-running errors on a dropped third strike led to a rally-ending double play.

Walton-Verona extended the lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning before Williamstown got on the board when Jade Pinkston singled and scored on an RBI by Delaney Kemper.

The loss ended Williamstown's season in the first round of the district tournament for the seventh consecutive season. The last Lady Demon win in post-season play came in a 4-3 victory over Walton-Verona in 2007.

Walton-Verona moves on to the championship game where it will face the winner of Grant Co./Simon Kenton game.

Jade Pinkston struck out the side in the first inning and five of six through two innings against Walton-Verona.
