With the post-season right around the corner, the Williamstown Lady Demons’ volleyball team is starting to gel at just the right time. That was never more evident than it was this weekend when the Lady Demons won the Harrison Co. Fillie Fall Fling in Cynthiana while playing the best they have all season.

Earning a #1 seed during pool play, Williamstown won the silver bracket championship with dominating wins over East Jessamine and Owen Co. The Lady Demons beat East Jessamine 2-0 with scores of 25-17 and 25-20 to advance to the title game. Continuing to rely on a strong serving game, Williamstown beat Owen Co. 2-0 with scores of 25-23 and 25-14 to secure the championship.

Williamstown also topped Pendleton Co. 2-0 in the tourney with scores of 21-6 and 21-10, giving the Lady Demons three wins in their last five matches.

For senior Ashely Marksbury, winning the championship will go down as one of her career highlights.

“It felt as if the world slowed down for just a few seconds. It was the proudest moment of my life,” Marksbury said. “I'm so proud of my girls.”

Junior Rachel Montgomery had a similar reaction to the Lady Demons’ victory.

“It feels amazing,” she said. “We have been struggling lately, so this accomplishment was awesome. It showed what we can accomplish together when we work together and give it our all.”

One improvement that was evident in the Lady Demons’ play during the tournament was better team play, another sign of maturity. Both Marksbury and Montgomery credited the team’s cohesiveness as a game-changing factor.

The Williamstown Lady Demons celebrate after winning the Harrison Co. Fillie Fall Fling on Oct. 11 in Cynthiana. The tourney win gives WHS a confidence boost with the post-season right around the corner.

“We played as a team and we all contributed in our own way,” said Marksbury. “We pushed as hard as we could. We showed everyone how much more we wanted it.”

Montgomery agreed.

“Our team played together,” she said. “We played as a team and everyone contributed, even those who were sitting on the bench. We knew what it was going to take to win and we gave everything we had to make it happen.”

With the district tournament less than a week away, there could not be a better time for the Lady Demons to put it all together. Williamstown is scheduled to take on Simon Kenton on Monday, October 20 at Williamstown in first-round action of the District 32 Tournament.

So what’s it going to take for the Lady Demons to be successful in the district tournament? It’s easy. Just keep playing like they did in the Harrison Co. tournament, says Marksbury and Montgomery.

“After this last tournament, I think our team is playing very well. We are playing as a team and everyone is contributing,” said Montgomery. “To finish this season strong we need to continue playing together and being active on the court.”

“Right now I feel we are playing as one,” added Marksbury. “We are working together as a team. I believe if we play like this every match, we will be unstoppable.”

Members of the team include seniors Julie Fryman, Ariana Johnson and Ashely Marksbury; juniors Chastity Evans, Megan Garrison and Rachel Montgomery; sophomores Stephanie Allen and Lacey Novak; freshman Madison Helton; 8th graders Autumn Fryman, Addelyn Lambert and Bryce Tucker; and 7th graders Macy Linder and Ryan Parsons.
