The Williamstown Lady Demons closed out 2014 strong with a pair of wins and a third-place finish in the NAS Holiday Classic at Carroll Co. High School.

Williamstown dominated in both wins, a 20-point victory over North Oldham, 53-33, and a 19-point romp over Ludlow, 57-38. Even in the Lady Demons' lone defeat during the tournament, Williamstown played well in a 69-57 loss to Scott High that was much closer than the final score indicates.

Williamstown Coach Kasey Mason said after the tournament that she was very happy with her team's effort, particularly on defense, where the Lady Demons were especially impressive while holding North

Oldman to 33 and Ludlow to 38, both season bests for Williamstown.

"Our defensive intensity was really effective in the tournament," Mason said. "Even in the loss to Scott, I felt that was one of the best games I've seen us play. It was a very exciting game."

After battling injuries and illnesses during the early part of the season, Mason believes her team is now starting to gel as it gets healthy.

"I believe the girls are starting to get into a rhythm, and it's good to see them playing so well together," she said.

Sophomore point guard Michaela Kennedy and junior guard Rachel Montgomery were both named to the All-Tournament team. Kennedy scored 46 points in the three games, with Montgomery totaling 43.

Junior Katie Cheek was not named to the All-Tournament team despite also playing very well with 32 points in the tournament.

With the pair of wins, Williamstown ended 2014 as one of the 8th Region's best teams with a record of 6-4, which included a 4-2 record against regional opponents. The Lady Demons ended the year on a roll with four wins in their last five games.

Game One

Williamstown 53, N. Oldham 33

Three players scored in double digits and the Lady Demons hit 14-of-19 free throw attempts in the win over the Lady Mustangs, who came into the game as one of the 8th Region's hottest teams with a 4-2 record that included three consecutive wins.

Williamstown was strong out of the gates, building a double-digit lead in the first quarter and adding to it by outscoring its opponents in each of the next three periods.

Junior Katie Cheek was solid throughout the game, scoring points in all four quarters, the only Lady Demon to do so, on the way to a game-high 14 points. She was good on four-of-six shots from the charity stripe.

Fellow junior Rachel Montgomery was next for the winners with 13 points. She was a major influence in the Lady Demons getting off to a strong start with 10 points in the first quarter, including a momentum-building 3-pointer.

Also hitting double figures for the Lady Demons was eighth-grader Kiki Johnson, who came off the bench to score 11 points, all in the second period. She was deadly from the free throw line where she went a perfect seven-for-seven.

Senior Ashely Marksbury and sophomore Michaela Kennedy scored six points each for Williamstown. Marksbury scored all six of her points in the first half, while Kennedy scored all of her points in the third quarter on a pair of 3-pointers.

Sydney Taylor rounded out the Lady Demons' scoring with three points.

Game Two

Scott 69, Williamstown 57

Williamstown gave Scott, the eventual tournament champions, all it could handle and even led late in the game before foul trouble took its toll and allowed the Lady Eagles to pull away in what was a much better game than the final deficit suggest.

Williamstown had one player foul out and three others end the game with four each. The Lady Demons were whistled for a total of 24 fouls in the contest, with Scott taking full advantage and hitting 23-of-34 from the charity stripe, including 17-of-22 in the final quarter.

Michaela Kennedy had one of her better offensive games of the season with six 3-pointers in a 22-point effort. The sophomore point guard scored 12 second-half points on four 3-pointers before fouling out.

Olivia Souder came off the bench for four points, followed by Ashely Marksbury with three for the Lady Demons.

An area of concern for the Lady Demons in the game was poor free throw shooting, with Williamstown as a team hitting just eight of its 20 free shots.

Game Three

Williamstown 58, Ludlow 39

Williamstown was especially tough defensively, holding Ludlow to only four points in the first quarter and less than 10 in each of the first three periods to build an impressive lead.
