WHS Demons open season with impressive win over Eminence

Playing in front of the home crowd to open the season, the Williamstown boys' basketball team understood the importance of getting off to a good start and setting the tone for the rest of the year. And the Demons delievered with an impressive 75-52 win over visiting Eminence.

 

Williamstown scored the game's first points and after getting into a rhythm had no problem with the visiting Warriors. Williamstown led for more than 28 minutes of the game and was never seriously threatened after the first quarter.

 

The Demons doubled up Eminence in the first eight minutes of play and were up by double digits at the half. The Williamstown lead was near 20 heading into the final quarter when the Demons stretched their lead to near 30 points.

 

Coming into the game as an unknown in his first season with Williamstown, junior guard Derick Cipollone wasted no time in letting both the home fans and the visiting Warriors know he can play. The Erlanger Lloyd transfer hit a 3-pointer for Williamstown's first points, and finished with a game-high 22 points.

Sophomore point guard Brennan Stanley was his usual self with 20 points, including 11 in the final five minutes he was on the court. Fellow guard Jon Jump more than held his own and scored 12 while playing strong defense.

 

Williamstown got strong play from its post players as well, with junior Chris Parsons scoring six points while pulling down rebound after rebound. Senior Carter Sarcione also controlled the boards and finished with four points.

 

Sophomore guard Harold Fernandez and sophomore forward Bryce Montgomery chipped in four points each for the winners, followed by Dustin Smith with two and Brady Montgomery with one.Williamstown (1-0) returns to action on Friday, Dec. 4, at Beechwood followed by a game Saturday, Dec. 5, at Carroll Co.

Williamstown was also victorious in junior varsity action, turning it on in the second half to pull away from the visiting Warriors.

 

Leading by only six at the half, 29-23, Williamstown came out of the locker room on fire and outscored Eminence 27-11 in the third period to put the game away.

 

Three players scored in double digits for the winners, led by Harold Fernandez with a game-high 14 points. Brady Montgomery was next with 13, followed by Chase Good with 10.

 

Trace Good was solid on both ends of the floor and finished with eight points for Williamstown. Chance Jordan was next with seven, followed by Landen Hare with six, Dustin Smith with five, and Ben McClelland with one.
